(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi must urgently tackle the unprecedented level of sectarian violence against Shi'a Muslims and ensure they are protected from further attacks, Amnesty International said in a press release after four Shi'a men were killed in south Cairo during a violent attack on Sunday.
"The Egyptian authorities must immediately order an independent and impartial investigation into the killing of the four men, and send a clear message that carrying out attacks and inciting violence against Shi'a Muslims will not be tolerated," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Amnesty International.
"Investigations must look at why security forces yet again failed to stop the bloodshed, as well as whether advocacy of hatred and incitement to violence played a role."
On 23 June, a large group of villagers surrounded the house of local Shi'a Muslim resident, Farahat Ali Mohamed, in the Zawiyat Abu Musalam village in Giza, where a religious ceremony was being held.
The villagers demanded that visiting Shi'a Sheikh Hassan Shahata hand himself over to them.
According to eyewitnesses, villagers forced their way into the house, breaking down the roof, doors and windows. Using sticks and knives, they beat and stabbed some individuals, dragged them out along the ground and attempted to set the house on fire.
Those inside the house – including children – were hit with rocks. The attackers broke several items inside the house including fridges and stole gold and other belongings. During the attack, the mob chanted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great) and called the Shi'as "infidels".
Hassan Shahata, two of his brothers and Imad Rabi' Ali died as a result of the attacks.
The house owner, Farahat Ali Mohamed, his two daughters and his son, who were all injured during the attack, were questioned by the prosecution today. According to reports, the prosecution issued 15 arrest warrants, but so far no arrests have been made.
It was reported that 12 people, including a woman and a girl, were also injured as a result of the sectarian violence in the area and that four other Shi'a homes were set on fire in the village.
Eyewitnesses also said police officers and members of the Central Security Forces, the riot police, were present at the scene but failed to intervene to stop the violence.
On Monday, President Morsi issued a statement condemning the killings and vowing to bring those responsible to justice. But he – and Prime Minister Hisham Qandil in a similar statement – failed to condemn incitement to violence against Shi'a Muslims.
According to local residents, Salafi and other Islamist groups have been inciting hatred and violence against Shi'a over the past few weeks, including during Friday sermons and by distributing pamphlets calling for their expulsion from the area.
During a conference held on 16 June in "support of the Syrian uprising" attended by President Morsi, several prominent Sunni Muslim Sheikhs used sectarian and inflammatory language to condemn attacks against Sunnis in Syria's armed conflict. For instance, to wide applause, Sheikh Mohamed Hassan called on President Morsi not to allow Shi'as into Egypt so as not to "corrupt it"; while another speaker called Shi'as "unclean".
"By not disassociating himself and his government from the hatred and incitement against Shi'as expressed during an event at which he was a speaker, President Morsi failed to signal that attacks against Shi'a Muslims will not be tolerated," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui.
"The mere condemnation of the attack by President Morsi will not be enough to stop the growing intolerance towards Shi'as in Egypt. Unless the perpetrators of these attacks in Giza are punished, the impunity will embolden others.
"It is deeply troubling to think of security forces standing still in the face of such gruesome violence. Only political will can stop this pattern of inaction during sectarian violence."
Since the rise to power of President Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood prior to his election, last year, Shi'a and other religious minorities in Egypt – including Coptic Christians – have continued to face sectarian violence and discrimination with impunity.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The group Egyptians Against Religious Discrimination denounced on Monday the murder of four Shia Muslims and the injuring of eight other Shias in mob attacks in the village of Zawyat Abu Musalam in Giza.
The lynching of the Shias by hundreds of extremist Salafis in the village which took place on Sunday was, according to the group, unprecedented in modern Egyptian history.
The group blames what they described as ''sectarian crimes'' on the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which President Mohamed Morsi hails, and their Salafist and ultra-conservative allies.
The group urged Egyptian citizens to beware of the “conspiracies forged against them in the dark.” They also emphasised the importance of taking to the streets and protesting on 30 June to “topple” the regime which, according to them, squandered all the values of citizenship rights and the rule of law.
According to the Egyptians Against Religious Discrimination group, the rising sectarian rhetoric culminated when Morsi gave a speech in a 'Syria Solidarity' conference and dubbed the struggle between the rebels and autocrat Syrian Bashar Al-Assad a sectarian struggle.
''The Egyptian 25 January revolution was an example in its peacefulness and equality between its citizens. Morsi just opened the door for sectarian strife between Egyptians,'' the group stated.
The Egyptian constitution, drafted and passed by national referendum during Morsi’s presidency, was described by the group as favouring one faith over others. The group stated that the constitution will lead to sectarian crimes and murders on the basis of identity.
The president’s office and Prime Minister Hisham Qandil released statements on Monday denouncing the killing of the four Shias.
About 3000 angry mobs allegedly led by Salafist sheikhs torched houses of Shia residents in the small village of Zawyat Abu Musalam in Giza governorate Sunday afternoon, killing four citizens, including prominent Shia figure Hassan Shehata.
The attacks came after weeks of incitement by Salafist preachers, according to eyewitness Hazem Barakat.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam strongly condemned the mob killing of four Shia Muslims in a Giza village on Sunday, an incident which has heighten fears of worsening sectarian frictions in Egypt.
Four Egyptian Shias were killed in a mob attack in the village of Zawyat Abu Musalam in Giza on Sunday.
An anti-Shia crowd gathered outside the house where a group of Shia Muslims were celebrating birth anniversary of twelfth Shiite Imam. The violence, which included the murder of four Shia residents and the injuring of several others, was captured on video.
"Islam does not recognise such [violent] practices which contradict human nature," Allam said on Monday.
The senior Sunni cleric stressed that bloodshed is highly prohibited in Islam and is deemed more serious a sin than the demolition of the Kaaba, the Muslims' sacred building located in Mecca.
One of those killed was a prominent Shia leader, Hassan Shehata.
Allam went on to explain that Islam prohibits the mutilation of the dead body. "Islam mandates treating the body as a living human, prohibiting beating and dragging of corpses."
Allam warned against mounting sectarian friction in Egypt that has "sucked the country into a vortex of violence."
Surat Ayatullah Ghulpaghani kepada Ulama Al-Azhar:
Mengecam Kekejian Wahabi Tidaklah Cukup!
|
Ulama Al Azhar yang kami hormati
Assalamu 'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

Amaran Majma' Jahani Ahlul Bait;
Pemimpin Syiah sudah disenaraikan untuk dibunuh
|
Majma' Jahani Ahlul Bait15 Sya'ban 1434 Hijrah24 -06- 2013
Rusuhan di Mesir;
Sekurang-kurangnya 4 Syiah dibunuh + Video
|

Lima rumah turut dibakar sepanjang rusuhan.
Menurut ketua keselamatan Giza, sekurang-kurangnya empat terbunuh.
Anwar berkata, Shehata sedang melawat salah seorang keluarga Syiah ketika serangan terjadi.

Universiti Al-Azhar;
Pensyarah Syariah Al-Azhar;
Syiah adalah muslim, pembunuh hendaklah dihukum

Dr. Ahmad Karimah, pensyarah Universiti Al-Azhar
Who is Sheikh Hassan Shahata?
|
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - He was a prominent Shia cleric who had thousands of followers due to his moderate views and his denouncement of radical and extremist movements in Egypt.
He was one of the main religious figures advising the Egyptian army and was an Imam of one of the most important mosques in capital Cairo.
He was well known for telling people about the nature of extremist groups and radical thoughts which are common in Egypt due to powerful presence of radical Salafist groups.
His enlightenment was not welcomed in the ruling system.
In 2009 Sheikh Hassan spent some time in jail under the government of ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak due to his speeches against radical movements harming Islam. 306 of his followers were also detained along with him.
This wasn’t the first time he was arrested; before that he was arrested in 1996 for what the then authorities called desecration of religions.
On June 23, 2013, Sheikh Hassan was brutally attacked at a gathering in the village of Zawiyet Abu Musalam by more than a thousand of Salafist extremists and along with 3 of his companions was harshly beaten to death.
In Egypt, the small Shia population is harassed by the authorities and treated with suspicion, being arrested - ostensibly for security reasons - but then being subjected to torrents of abuse by state security officers for their religious beliefs.
The Arab country has been witnessing a rise in hate crimes against Shias, which analysts believe is due to widespread anti-Shia propaganda by extremist Wahabis aimed at encouraging people to go fight alongside terrorists in Syria.
Critics warn that militant extremists are acting with dangerous impunity.
Murder of Sheikh Hassan
The brutal attack on Sunday (June 23, 2013) in the village of Zawiyet Abu Musalam, near the Pyramids of Giza, came as about 30 Shias were having a meal to mark a religious occasion. Hundreds of young men descended on them in the house.
In online videos of the killings, young men armed with metal and wooden clubs, swords and machetes, beat the Shiites on the head and back, trapping them in the narrow entrance of the house.
The Shiites beg for mercy as blood streams down their heads and soaks their robes. A crowd pressing around them triumphantly chanting and shouting. Some screamed "You sons of dogs!"
One video shows a young man dragging the motionless and bloodied body of one victim by a rope.
The videos appeared genuine and conformed with Associated Press reporting on the attack.
Afterward, the attackers congratulated each other, one witness, local activist Hazem Barakat, said in written and video account of the events he posted online.
He said that in the weeks preceding the attack, ultraconservative Salafist clerics in the area had been speaking out against Shias.
Raising wave of “hatred violence”
Mobs in rural areas have in recent months lynched suspected criminals amid a rise in gangs robbing motorists and banks.
Police still often don't act to stop crimes, and the public has grown increasingly frustrated over increasing economic hardships and shortages.
Sunday's attack, in contrast, seemed a straight-forward unleashing of hatreds.
Egypt's population of 90 million is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim, with about 10 percent Christians. The small Shia minority is largely hidden and its size never firmly established, though some estimates put it as small as 1 or 2 million.
"Killing and dragging Egyptians because of their faith is a hideous result of the disgusting 'religious' discourse which was left to mushroom," top reform campaigner Mohamed ElBaradei wrote in his Twitter account.
"We are waiting for decisive steps from the regime and Al-Azhar (mosque) before we lose what is left of our humanity."
His Dustour Party blamed the president. It said the attack was "a direct result of the disgusting hate speech ... escalating and expanding under the sight ... of the regime and in presence of its president and with his blessings."
Al-Azhar, the world's primary seat of Sunni Islamic learning said in a statement Monday that it was "terrified" by the killings.
The past few months have seen a dramatic rise in anti-Shia hate speech by Salafis, many of whom are President Muhammad Morsi supporters.
Salafis, a radical movement of Sunnis, view Shias as heretics and regularly denounce them on TV talk shows, websites and in mosque sermons.
Egypt al-Wasat Party slams Shia killing in Abu Mussalam
|
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Chairman of Egypt’s al-Wasat Party Abou Elela Mady has strongly condemned the killing of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Hassan Shehata and three of his followers by Salafi extremists near Cairo.
Mady deplored the deadly incident as “unacceptable,” calling on Egyptian judicial officials to bring the culprits to justice.
He also stated that the Shia cleric and his followers were all Egyptian citizens and that it was not acceptable that they had fallen victim to such violence only because they were Shia Muslims.
On June 23, several hundred Takfiri extremist attacked and surrounded the house of the Shia cleric in the village of Abu Mussalam in Giza Province. The extremists killed the four Shias and dragged the bodies on the streets.
Dozens of other followers who were at the house for the commemoration of a Shia holy day were injured.
Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil has also denounced the deadly incident, saying that he is closely following an investigation into the killing. He has also promised that the culprits would be punished.
The Shia community in Egypt is being targeted by Salafis, with the support of a number of countries, especially Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Egyptian anti-sectarian group blames Morsi for Shia attacks
|
Egyptian grand mufti condemns Shia killings as a worse sin in Islam than destruction of sacred Kaaba in Mecca
|
Grand Ayatollah Saafi addressing al-Azhar scholars:
Condemning Brutal Slaughtering of Sheikh Shehata Not Sufficient / Al-Azhar is More Responsible than Before
|
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Following the bloody massacre of four Egyptian Shiites including sheikh “Muhammad Hassan Shehata” an outstanding Egyptian scholar, grand ayatollah “Loftollah Saafi Golpayegani” stated in a message to al-Azhar scholars: We are thankful of your reaction to condemn these crimes against humanity. However it is not sufficient. Your responsibility is more than before.
Supreme religious authority of the Shiite world also emphasized: O you all Muslim scholars! Let us call Muslims to unity and consolidation once again and to demonstrate the whole world that dear Islam is the religion of mercy, compassion and kindness; it is a religion that wishes dignity for humanity.
Following is his complete message:
In the Name of Allah the Most Compassionate the Most Merciful
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah , the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy (Quran 85:8),
Esteemed Al-Azhar Scholars,
Al-salamu alaikum wa rahmatollah wa barakatuh
To our regret and sorrow, we have been informed that Dr. Muhammad Hassan Shehatah has been martyred by an ignorant and deviant group in the most brutal and savage form. His body has also been disrespected –against all humane and Islamic values- depicting a very harsh and violent picture of Islam which is a religion of compassion and peace.
It can be said these are not unprecedented actions by this ignorant and savage group since they have not only committed these crimes in Egypt but they have also imperiled Muslims’ security and peace in other Islamic countries creating a dark atmosphere for them. However it is surprising that this time these crimes have taken place in a country that hosts large university of Al-Azhar being proud of offering the world sublime Islamic knowledge and its fair virtues.
Esteemed al-Azhar should take its primary responsibility more seriously. We are thankful of your effort to condemn this crime against humanity but it is not sufficient. As great Muslim scholars you are responsible before the dear Islam and you are more responsible than before.
Don't you see how wahhabi scholars issue anti-Islamic fatwas and urge Muslims to shed other Muslims' blood?
Don't you think it might be a conspiracy by enemies who live in peace in their countries but try to wage a war among Muslims?
Haven't you seen pictures depicting brutal murder of innocent children, defenseless women and men; pictures they show the world?!
Please stand up for Allah's sake (SWT) and use the most of your spiritual and religious power; make a quick reaction for tomorrow may be too late.
O all Muslim scholars! Let us call Muslims to unity and consolidation and follow this verse " and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart Quran 8:46"
Let us show the world that dear Islam is the religion of mercy, compassion and kindness; it is a religion that wishes dignity for humanity.
Let us announce to the world that our constitution is the holy Quran; a book we believe in and we would like to convey its great message to the world; messages that lead to eternal felicity. Ask the heads of Islamic countries to stop disunity and bow down before the holy Quran.
With a heart filled with sorrow and grief for Muslims' deplorable condition, I resort to Allah (SWT) and ask Him to restore Muslims' dignity and defeat Islam's enemies.
