Iran Supreme Leader: US War on Syria to Spell Disaster

The Leader of Islamic Revolution has warned that any military intervention by the US and its allies in Syria will spell "disaster" for the region.

Iran Supreme Leader: US War on Syria to Spell Disaster
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The Leader of Islamic Revolution has warned that any military intervention by the US and its allies in Syria will spell "disaster" for the region.

"The US intervention will be a disaster for the region," Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei told a meeting with the cabinet of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Wednesday.

"The region is like a gunpowder depot. (Its) future cannot be predicted" in case of a military strike against Syria, the Leader added.

The Leader’s comments came as the US has been mulling carrying out an airstrike on Syria by moving its naval forces closer to the Arab country.

The call for military action against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus last week.

The Syrian Army strongly rejected any role in the alleged chemical attack, saying the accusations were fabricated to distract a visiting team of the UN chemical weapons experts and to cover up militants' losses.

During a news conference on Tuesday in Damascus, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem challenged the US and its allies to present evidence that the government had used chemical weapons.

"We are hearing war drums around us. If they want to launch an attack against Syria, I think using the excuse of chemical weapons is not true at all. I challenge them to show what proof they have,” Muallem said.

He also criticized Jordanian government which has provided a main base for US military and CIA activities along their borders against Syria and said,” we have never done any wrong toward Jordan. It is said that they are preparing to take part in chemical war (against Syria). We call on our Jordanian brothers to respect right of neighborhood.”

Agonizing fate awaits Zionist regime: Iran's Majlis Speaker

Iran's Majlis Speaker, Ali Larijani, has said that if the Zionist regime would be tempted to stir sedition in Syria, a more painful fate would await the illegal Zionist entity, in comparison to its crushing defeat in the 33-Day Lebanon war.

Agonizing fate awaits Zionist regime: Iran
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - In an address to Parliament's open session, today (Wednesday), the speaker noted that as of two years ago, following the victories of Muslims in the recent revolutions, the Western regimes and a number of regional states have turned to Syria to somehow compensate for their setbacks and loss of interests by dealing a blow against one of the centers of resistance in the region.

In further remarks, the speaker pointed out that they initially maintained this childish imagination that the Syrian ruling system will be toppled within a few weeks. But, when they faced the resistance of the Syrian administration, they dispatched terrorists, sent weapons, and piled up political pressures to somehow force the Syrian government to surrender.

The speaker added that meanwhile, the failure of the West, Zionists, and reactionary regional states in these phases led them to adopt satanic measures, including delivery of chemical weapons to terrorist outfits.

He went on to add that while the UN officials are yet to complete their studies in Syria, the bells of war tolled; and the US and Britain, in the absence of the UN Security Council's permission, and in collaboration with a number of regional states, especially the Zionist regime, are hell-bent on spearheading possible military operations in Syria.

Larijani said that the Majlis strongly condemns this hasty and illegitimate plot of the US and the West. He added that although the West might start anti-Syrian operations with the collaboration of a number of power-thirsty regional states; they would not be the ones who would end it.

UN Envoy: Rebels Used Chemical Weapons

Syria’s envoy to the UN Bashar Jaafari on Wednesday accused rebel forces of using chemical weapons to "bring about military intervention and aggression against Syria".

UN Envoy: Rebels Used Chemical Weapons
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Many facts "tend to prove the innocence of the Syrian government, which has been subject to false accusations," AFP quoted the ambassador as saying.

The West and Turkey "have enabled terrorist groups to create a laboratory for chemical weapons on Turkish territory with materials provided by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar… and to bring these chemical weapons to Syria for use," he said.

Western countries including the United States are allegedly considering a military invasion of Syria under the pretext of the use of chemical weapons in the country.

While both the Syrian government and the foreign-backed militant groups accuse each other of using chemical weapons, a UN investigation team is in Syria probing into the incident.

Russia has presented the UN Security Council with documents proving that the rebels have conducted the latest chemical attack which took place on August 21.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the West could act on Syria even without the full backing of the United Nations Security Council.

"Israel will be set on fire if US launch attack on Syria ": Senior Syrian military officer
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A senior Syrian military officer has warned that Israel will be set on fire if the US and its allies launch an attack on Syria.

"If Damascus is attacked, Tel Aviv will become a target and a full-scale war against Syria will essentially justify an attack against Israel," a senior Syrian army official told Fars News Agency on Tuesday.

"If Syria is attacked, Israel will also be set on fire and such an attack will, in turn, engage Syria's neighbors," the source added.

The source also warned the US and other western states that if Syria "becomes weak," certain "irresponsible" groups will be formed which will endanger Israel's security.

"Thus, a US attack on Syria will herald frequent strikes and attacks on Israel, not just by Damascus and its allies in retaliation, but by extremist groups who will find a ground for staging their aspirations," he said.

Also on Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Ministry held a special meeting in Tel Aviv with the participation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon, Chief of Staff Major General Benny Gantz and an array of top military officers over the possible war on Syria.

"Israel is prepared for every scenario," Netanyahu said after the meeting.

"We're not part of the Syrian civil war, but if we'll spot an attempt to harm us we'll respond with great force."

The US has been mulling carrying out an airstrike on Syria by moving its naval forces closer to the Arab country while its Special Forces and CIA operatives reportedly are in Syria.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmailee made the remarks during a tour to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Tuesday.

Emphasizing full self-sufficiency of Iran’s air defense in producing the required military equipment and high capabilities of Iranian experts in defense fields, Brigadier General Esmailee underlined that in the very near future a total of 15 completed defense project are scheduled to be unveiled in the coming days.

Last week, Commander of the Army Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan announced that Iran plans to unveil new defense and military hardware and equipment in the coming weeks.

“Iranian Army plans to showcase its latest military accomplishments on the occasion of the 33rd Anniversary of the Islamic Republic’s defense against the Iraqi invasion,” Brigadier General Pourdastan said.

Vatican blasts West for planning war against Syria despite UN probe

The Vatican's official daily has criticized Western powers for escalating their war rhetoric against Syria despite an ongoing UN investigation into a recent alleged chemical attack near Damascus.

Vatican blasts West for planning war against Syria despite UN probe
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The Vatican's official daily has criticized Western powers for escalating their war rhetoric against Syria despite an ongoing UN investigation into a recent alleged chemical attack near Damascus.

"The tones are becoming ever more drastic and the action being taken by the United Nations appears subjected to a sort of crossfire," the Osservatore Romano newspaper wrote on Tuesday.

The daily said that "various international actors appear no longer to consider the investigation a determining factor," adding that "what commitment there was" to a negotiated settlement "appears to be dying out."

On Thursday, the Vatican's permanent observer at the United Nations in Geneva called for caution over opposition allegations that the Syrian government was responsible for the attack.

"There should not be a judgment until there is sufficient proof," Monsignor Silvano Tomasi said.

"What immediate interest would the government in Damascus have in causing such a tragedy?" he asked, adding that the real question is who really benefits from “this inhuman crime.”

Pointing to the havoc caused by the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Tomasi said that “armed intervention does not bring any constructive results."

The call for military action against Syria intensified after the foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching the alleged chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar on August 21.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem challenged the United States and its allies to present evidence that the government had used chemical weapons.

"We are hearing war drums around us. If they want to launch an attack against Syria, I think using the excuse of chemical weapons is not true at all. I challenge them to show what proof they have,” Muallem said.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the violence.

The Army’s Ground, Air and Naval forces will hold a massive parade in late September to mark the Sacred Defense Week, which commemorates eight years of defense against Iraqˈs aggression under former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

US Gen. Anthony Zinni warn against Syria strike

Former US officials have warned that an imminent US strike on Syrian government targets would draw the United States deep into the Arab country’s crisis.

US Gen. Anthony Zinni warn against Syria strike
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - “The one thing we should learn is you can’t get a little bit pregnant,” said retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni, as reported by The Washington Post on Tuesday.

“If you do a one-and-done and say you’re going to repeat it if unacceptable things happen, you might find these people keep doing unacceptable things. It will suck you in,” added Zinni, who was at the helm of US Central Command when the US launched cruise missiles at suspected terrorist sites in Afghanistan and weapons facilities in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

As a United Nations inspection team is still investigating an alleged chemical attack carried out last week in Syria, the US has jumped to conclusion announcing the Syrian government forces responsible for the attack, which have killed hundreds of civilians.

On Tuesday, US Vice President Joe Biden said there is no doubt that the Syrian government is responsible for the use of chemical weapons near Damascus.

Syria has strongly rejected the allegation, saying foreign-backed armed groups, who have been fighting the government forces for the past two and a half years, launched the fatal attack.

The US military is now preparing to strike on targets inside the Syrian territory. In recent days, the Pentagon has moved more warships into place in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and American war planners have updated strike targets that include government and military installations inside Syria.

Former US officials also pointed out that the cruise missile strikes on targets in Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan in the past carried unintended consequences.

“We didn’t really gain anything,” said former US ambassador to Damascus Ryan C. Crocker, referring to the previous strikes on targets in foreign nations.

“The behavior of our adversaries did not change. A couple of cruise missiles are not going to change their way of thinking,” he said.

Meanwhile, a number of lawmakers urged the White House not to launch another war in the Middle East. Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) was among the 20 lawmakers who signed a letter written by Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.) arguing that it would be illegal for the Obama administration to authorize an attack on Syria without a congressional sign-off.

Hezbollah: West’s Military Intervention in Syria to Inflame Full-Scale War in Region

Several high-ranking officials of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement warned against the dire consequences of a possible US military strike on Syria, saying such a move will definitely engulf the region in the flames of war.

Hezbollah: West’s Military Intervention in Syria to Inflame Full-Scale War in Region
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Speaking to Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai Al-A’am on Tuesday, senior Hezbollah officials underlined that any military intervention by the US or the West in Syria will result in a full-fledged war in the Middle East.

“The US attack on Syria will result in the reinvigoration of the Al-Qaeda in that country,” they told the newspaper.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Mualem said on Tuesday that Syria will press on with its military efforts despite any potential foreign strikes on its territory, adding that any strike would serve the interests of al Qaeda-linked rebel groups.

"The war effort led by the United States and their allies will serve the interests of Israel and secondly the Al-Nusra Front," Mualem told a press conference in Damascus.

"The (government's) military effort will not stop around Damascus. If the purpose is to limit the victories of our armed forces, they will not be successful," Mualem said.

Any foreign strike on Syria to try to create a balance of power in the war between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and the rebels is "delusional", the foreign minister said.

"If the purpose of a possible (foreign) military strike is to achieve a balance of power ... it's delusional and not at all possible," Mualem added.

"If they wanted to attack Syria using claims - utterly incorrect claims - about the use of chemical weapons, I defy them to provide what evidence they have," he said.

Russia warned on Tuesday that a military intervention in Syria could have "catastrophic consequences" for the region, and called on the international community to show "prudence" over the crisis.

"Attempts to bypass the Security Council, once again to create artificial groundless excuses for a military intervention in the region are fraught with new suffering in Syria and catastrophic consequences for other countries of the Middle East and North Africa," a foreign ministry spokesman said, AFP reported.

"We are calling on our American partners and all members of the world community to demonstrate prudence (and) strict observance of international law, especially the fundamental principles of the UN Charter," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.
